Summer Memories: #Monday Listicles

Since discovering Stasha over at "The good life" I can honestly say I look forward to Mondays. Hopefully you enjoy reading my lists as much as I have fun making them. This week's topic is "10 Summer Memories". I decided on 5 from my childhood and 5 since having children. Pop over to Stasha's Monday Listicles for some great reads and be sure to check out Stasha's beautiful photos at Stasha B Photography.

Pre-Kids:
I remember growing up in the late 1960-70's back in the days when you were able to spend your summer days roaming around the neighbourhood on your own, coming home only at mealtimes. Sadly a sense of freedom our kids will never know. Do any of these sound familiar to anyone?

1.      Playing cops and robbers on your bikes in the neighbourhood and staying out until the street lights came on.

2.      Going to the neighbourhood park just to hang out or play box hockey.

3.      Playing a game of Monopoly that went on for days!

4.      Going to Disneyland for the first time in 1972 - I was 11-1/2. We took a 3 week road trip and met up with cousins from Seattle, Washington and Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Circa 1974

5.      Going on an airplane for the first time to Hawaii. Yes that is
Pan Am you see in the background. We left from Seattle and went
with my dad's brother's family. (That's me, second from the left)

Post-Kids:

Summer 1996:  Riley (left) & J2

6.   Going camping for the first time with our kids. According to G, I would be depriving them if I didn’t. Oh yay…it was over 40 degrees Celsius! That would be 104 degrees Fahrenheit PEOPLE!  Remember…I’m concrete NOT canvas!!!

7.      Going to Disneyland with the boys for the first time in 1999. J2 was 6-1/2 and R was 5. That was the pre-digital era and ummmm...I can't seem to "locate" the pics at the moment. *sigh*

July 2006

8.      Going on an Alaskan cruise. G and my sister surprised me and my mom on Mother's Day with a cruise to celebrate the end of both our cancer treatments.

9.      Driving all the way from Las Vegas, Nevada to Calgary, Alberta without an overnight stay. This was NOT intentional. We did not anticipate a major event in Utah which had hotels fully booked along the main highway. I'll leave it at that.

10.   2008 - Checking off another item on my bucket list - Wake-boarding. I couldn't raise my arms for a week afterwards and felt like I drank almost half the lake but whooo-hoooo...I got up!

Have a great week!  D

  1. As a tourism professor that picture of you and your family in front of the PAN AM jet is absolutely priceless! Thanks for sharing your memories.

    1. Ha! Isn't it! I have always remembered that pic. We had to make sure to get PAN AM in the background as it was the first time I ever went on a plane.

  2. I love vacations. And I too remember staying out until the street lights came on. Sometimes it makes me sad that my kids won't know that same freedom.

    1. I can now relate to when my mom used to say "when I was growing up..." Never thought I be saying the same thing. :)

  3. Wow to #9. But I bet it still is a good memory. Maybe not so much fun at the time, though? :)

    1. Thankfully we were travelling with my husband's brother and family so there was less uhhh "tension". By the time it was decided to keep driving we were all pretty much hysterical. Hmmmm...perhaps not a good thing to admit?!?! Makes for something to talk about that's for sure. =D

  4. Wow! I'm impressed with that wake boarding. I do believe I wouldn't even be able to get myself up. Hawaii & an Alaskan cruise? Wow! I'm guessing they were quite the trips!

    1. Thank you. I was bound and determined to get up if it killed or drowned me (whichever came first). Tee hee.

I live on the west coast so Hawaii and Alaska are right on our door step. Funny how you look at the opposite coast for vacation destinations. :D

  6. I look forward to your lists and other blog posts. Love getting to know you. And boy I hear you on those carefree days roaming around with friends when we were young. I wish we could let our kids do the same!!

    1. Thanks Stasha! We're almost neighbours (except for the border). :)

I always look forward to see what new photos you'll be posting/tweeting.

    1. Gotta love digital! Gone are the days of developing a roll to find only one or two good pics. HA!

  8. Yes! I totally have some of these early memories too, of being able to play outside all day without adults and not coming home until the street lights came on. And if we were lucky, our parents would let us go back out to play flashlight tag. And many, many long games of Monopoly. Sigh...how things have changed. Your list is great, I really enjoyed reading.

    1. Oh yah...flashlight tag!!! I don't think my boys ever got as dirty as I did from just playing. *sigh* Thanks for reading!

    1. As you can see by the pic, it was back in the days when you used to get dressed up to go on the plane! We actually went out to buy new outfits. HA!

  10. Hawaii and Alaska are two states I'd LOVE to visit. Hopefully someday!

I was a kid in the 70s too! I'm so glad I was a child back then and not today. I'm so glad we didn't have video games and mobile devices to stare at all day. And I'm so glad my mom kicked us outdoors during the summer and didn't have to worry about us. She'd literally shoo us out the door after lunch and only when we were hungry for dinner, or if it was getting dark, would we wander back home.

    1. I agree with you. It is sad our kids aren't able to experience the freedom like we had with the physical play outdoors and making up all kinds of games. :( Wonder what it will be like for their kids???
