D is for Dementia

What is dementia?

“Dementia is an overall term for a set of symptoms that are caused by disorders affecting the brain. Symptoms may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language, severe enough to reduce a person's ability to perform everyday activities. A person with dementia may also experience changes in mood or behaviour.

If, like me, you are confused whether or not there is a difference between Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia, I found this video quite informative:

For the past 3-4 years, our mom’s mental health has been declining. In the last year we have had to move her from her retirement residence (where she has lived for the past 9 years) to a long-term care facility with round the clock care. It has not been easy.

Dementia does not discriminate. It is a debilitating condition that is unkind and unforgiving.

With all that has been going on in the world, we have not been able to see her for a number of weeks although we have had a couple of phone calls with her. Thankfully she is happy, in her own little world and well cared for.

  1. Your mom is adorable as always. My mom had a little dementia at the end of her life. She was mostly confused. Glad you got your mom somewhere that she's safe and happy!
